Russell, et al Source: Temple U xerox scan edit by DPH 1-8-93 &&111 might share his fear, but after a moment the panic feeling passed. They could do nothing and would only become terrified. It was up to him alone to keep the leopards at a safe distance from the cart. The tiny flame in the lantern made one last fluttering struggle and went out. Black darkness shut down over the cart. =Rodmika could hear the swish of the grass as the leopards made their short quick charges through it. Sooner or later, he feared, one of them would find the courage to leap upon the cart. He considered cutting the chicken coop loose. In it were five fine, white leghorn hens and a rooster that a neighbor had given his mother. He decided against it, but still, he thought, it would be better to lose the chickens than have the cats spring upon the cart. Another lamp was packed among their possessions. He didn't know where to find it, but cautiously thrusting his arm here and there among their provisions, he began to search. He found only their supplies. Disgusted, he drew his hand away smeared with buffalo butter. An angry snarl came to him from just beyond one wheel. The bullock on that side snorted in fear and veered away. The other wheel went into the ditch. =Rodmika hauled hard on the line to bring the cart back onto the road just in time to prevent it from overturning. Several times =Dino's family had saved enough to buy two of =Gian-Carlo's legs, and once they had enough for three legs. Then, each time they had needed the money for other things. Each time that the money had been spent =Dino was afraid someone else would buy all four legs of =Gian-Carlo before they ever could, for =Enrico wanted to sell him. Down, down, through farmyards and olive orchards, down long flights of steps they wound. When they reached the narrow stone-paved streets of the town where cars honked and motor scooters hooted, =Dino's heart leaped with excitement. By this time they knew that the sun would not shine that day. The sea was an angry green. It snarled in white foam along the rocky headlands. It burst in upon the fishermen's beach. And before they ate their bread at noonday, they knew that they would not sell many pots. Even if tomorrow was =Christ's =Birthday and =Papa was the finest painter in all =Italy, no one would buy their wares. the wonderful quality that they became invisible to anyone who was unfit for the office he held, or was hopelessly stupid. Those would be just the clothes for me! the =Emperor thought. If I wore those, I should be able to find out what men in my empire are not fit for the positions they hold. I could tell the clever from the stupid. Yes, I must have them weave some of the stuff for me at once! And he gave the two rogues a great deal of money in hand, that they might begin work at once. As for the rogues, they put up two looms and pretended to be working; but they had nothing at all on their looms. They at once demanded the finest silk and velvet and the costliest gold thread. These they put into their own bags, and worked at the empty looms till late into the night. I should like to know how far they have got on with the stuff, thought the =Emperor. But he felt quite uncomfortable when he remembered that those who were not fit for their offices could not see it. He believed, indeed, that he had nothing to fear for himself, but he preferred first to send someone else to see how matters stood. All the people in the city knew what peculiar power the stuff possessed, and all were anxious to see how bad or how stupid their neighbors were. I will send my faithful old =Minister to the weavers thought the =Emperor. He can judge best We shall need to take a small shovel to dig with and a pail for some of the treasures we may find. We would be wise to carry a small magnifying glass, too. For some of the little creatures and their works are very, very small. First let us roam across this sand bar. A few hours ago it was covered with water; now at ebb tide, the water has slipped back. The sand bar points at the sea like a long finger. Its surface is marked with ridges where the waves have heaped the sand. Tiny rivers carry off the water that was left behind and wash deep ditches in the sand, just as much larger rivers would do inland. Look at that jet of water spurting up like a small geyser. Dig quickly if you would find what makes it. He is trying to get away, and the only way he can go is down. Now you have him! PuD, and pull hard! He seems to have roots as he holds fast to the sands. In the morning the boy set out. The =Indian walked with him to the end of his own south line and shook hands. You one good boy, =John, he said unexpectedly. You come again next year. I will, sure, promised =John. Thanks for all you've done for me, =Seth. Without you, I couldn't have done this. He hitched the heavy pack up on his shoulder. I guess, next to the =Judge, you're about the best friend I ever had. The =Indian's brown face wrinkled all over beneath his battered hat. He made a big gesture with his hand. Oh, sure, he said. Big country. Nice company. Plenty furs us both. He held =John's hand. He said, Now listen to =Seth. If creeks open, you cut two logs crossing. You mind =Seth. You cut two logs. One log roll. Two logs safe crossing water. Yes, sure, agreed =John. He wanted to get away. The sun was well up by now. By, said =Seth. =John walked hard. He felt strong that morning. He felt like a grown man. The weight of the pack, chafing his shoulders, was a pleasure to carry. Every time he eased it one way or another, he thought about what it was going to mean. He thought about coming home and telling his mother. He would buy her a new dress. He would make a Purchase of some calico for his sisters. Make a back between strokes, they saw that others had come to swim. It was =Harold =Boyd and a group of his buddies, including a cousin, =Little =Red, who had been visiting the =Boyds during the past month. Harold =Boyd was one boy =David really disliked. A lot of the other boys didn't like =Harold any better than =David did, but =Harold usually had money to spend, =80 he always had a group about him to listen to his bragging and to suffer his bullying. Harold cupped his hands and hollered again across the water, You fellows come out now! We want to swim. Come on in if you want to, =Ben shouted back. Nobody's stopping you. The Impractical Chimney Sweep =John =William's father was a =Practical =Chimney =Sweep. But then his name was =Albert =George, and, of course, that made all the difference. Albert =George used to drive round the town in his donkey-cart, with all his brushes stuck up above him like furry chimneys. When people met him, they would ask, How is the boy, =Albert =George? Is he going to be a chimney sweep like you? =Albert =George would shake his head and say, I don't know. He's not what I'd call practical. One morning, =Albert =George and =John =William set out to clean the chimneys of the house of =Lord =Summerset. His house was a very big one, built in the middle of a fine park. It was still dark when =Albert =George drove up the long drive to the house. No, what? asked =Janie. I'm glad you said you were scared. =Janie stopped and stared at her. Why? I never thought you'd be scared of anything. You made me feel so foolish. You know so much about picking wood, and you can handle a boat and do so many things. Her cheeks were very pink, but her eyes were steady. All I know is how to do housework. So if you hadn't been scared this afternoon, and I was scared, I guess it would have been just the last straw. But now I don't feel so foolish about being stupid in other way. You're not stupid, =Janie objected. You made me feel kind of foolish, too, with my mother bragging about how you like to sew and do housework. I just do it because it has to be done, and I know I should do it better, but I just can't keep my mind on it. But you know how to do things in the house and outdoors, too, argued =Myra. And I don't. Oh, you'll learn, said =Janie gaily. If you stay on this island long enough, you'll learn to be a real islander. Everything will work out fine. =Myra's lips turned up in a shy but happy smile. =Janie smiled, too, and here it was, the wonderful feeling she had expected to have when she first tried to make friends with =Myra. 00000 000 GINN READERS LEVEL 3 1st first grade book DY1:GINN03.TXT 00000 000 A DUCK IS A DUCK (NO AUTHOR IN COVER) 1969 DISKS 91; 540 00000 000 TRANSCRIBED BY DPH THE WHOLE BOOK 00001 111 This is =Bill. =Bill is in the park. Who can sleep in this city, he asked? I can't! Not with the cars going up and down the streets. The cars come and go, and they don't stop. The policeman said, Who did this? A woman said, Oh, no! The policeman said, Who did this? The Mayor said, Find Mr =Pine. Fast! All the signs are up, said Mr =Pine. And I can look for my glasses. Now where are they? He looked and looked. Hello, little ant, said the grasshopper. Will you come and play with me? I will hide in the grass, and you can look for me there. The ant said, You can hide in the grass. But I can't look for you there. I have work to do. Don't work, said the grasshopper. When do you play, little ant? I don't have time to play, said the ant. I'm looking for food. I'm going to put the food away. And when the snow comes, I will have food to eat. Work away, said the grasshopper! I'm going to play now. And away he went in the grass. The ant was still working. She called, You can play but I will work. And I will have food to eat when the snow comes. When they were eating, City Mouse saw something big. He said, Run! Run, Country Mouse! And don't stop. Away went City Mouse. And away went Country Mouse. They ran out of the house. City Mouse called, Come back, Country Mouse. There is no danger now. The cat went back into the house. But Country Mouse did not stop. He called, No, I don't like to live where there is danger. I'm going home. Country Mouse ran up a hill and into the country. When he got home he said, At last I can stop! I will not go back to the city. Not where the cat is! I will eat country food and City Mouse can live in danger. I used to have a dream long ago about a giant tall as a tree. He came to the door and said, Come, holding his hand to me. I never went but now that I'm bigger I wish I had. Down in the bog. Not for me, said the bunny. Under the water, I would drown in bog. So he went looking for a home. Where do you live, he asked a groundhog. In a log, said a groundhog. Under a rock or a log or a stone. 00098 111 Where would a bunny find a home? 00000 000 GINN READERS GRADE 1- LEVEL 6 DY1:GINN06.TXT 00000 000 SEVEN IS MAGIC (NO AUTHOR ON COVER) 1969, 1973 DISKS 91; 540 00000 000 TRANSCRIBED BY DPH MAR 83 STRATIFIED SRS starting with pages: 00000 000 29-0; 45-4; 67-1; 80-8; 125-2; 135-6; 168-2; 204-8; 224-2; 233. 00001 111 =Ted was on the telephone. =Dad said, Hello, =Ted. When you answer the 00010 111 telephone, you have to remember what is said. I will, said =Ted. 00011 111 00012 111 He would help Mr =Mays with the balloons. Right this way, =Bill 00013 111 called. Balloons! Balloons. Get your balloons here! There was a 00014 111 balloon for every boy and girl at =Anders School. Every balloon 00015 111 had a postcard with it. The postcard said: This balloon came to you 00016 111 from the children at the =Anders School. Please mail the postcard 00017 111 back to the school. We want to know who you are and where you live. 00018 111 Mr =Mays let one balloon go. They he called to the children. Let the 00019 111 balloons go! The children thought about the people who would get 00020 111 the balloons. Who could they be? What fun it would be when the 00021 111 postcards came back in the mail. 00022 111 She couldn't run and hop and jump with the other children. But every 00023 111 day school came to =Nan! Every day Miss =Green came to help =Nan 00024 111 with her schoolwork. And every day Mr =Migs came with the mail. 00025 111 Long before he came, =Nan was waiting for him. At the other houses 00026 111 Mr =Migs would put the mail in the boxes. But not at =Nan's house. 00027 111 When the mail came for =Nan, Mr =Migs took it right to her. Once a 00028 111 letter came from =Nan's grandmother, who lived a long way off. 00029 111 Other letters came from other children who could go to school. 00030 111 In the morning the city spreads its wings making a song of stone 00031 111 that sings. In the evening the city goes to bed hanging lights about 00032 111 its head. See the sights! See the sights, called the tall man! 00033 111 Every day the tall man came to =5th street. Every day, he called, 00034 111 See the sights! See the sights! One day =Dan was walking on =5th 00035 111 street. The tall man was there. He was calling, See the sights! 00036 111 =Dan saw a big sight-seeing bus stop on =5th street. There was a 00037 111 sign on the back of the bus. The sign said, See the sights! What 00038 111 sights? Where does the bus go, =Dan thought. The next day,=Dan 00039 111 walked up to the tall man. I want to see the sights, he said. When 00040 111 can I take the bus? 00041 111 At last the truck came to a stop in a cool barn. A big blackbird 00042 111 looked down from the top of the barn. He could see the top of 00043 111 Mr =Harvey's hat in the back of the truck. A hat, thought the 00044 111 blackbird! I know something I can do with that! The blackbird took 00045 111 the hat from the truck. In no time at all he was flying 00046 111 out of the barn and over to the farmer's scarecrow. He put the hat 00047 111 on top of the scarecrow. Now I know the farmer from the scarecrow, 00048 111 said the blackbird. He smiled as he thought of the trick he had 00049 111 played on the farmer. The next Saturday Mr and Mrs =Harvey went for 00050 111 a ride. 00051 111 Cat lived under eagle. Pig lived under Cat. They liked to live this 00052 111 way. Three in a tree! When eagle wanted something, he would call 00053 111 down to Cat. When Cat wanted something, she would call down to Pig. 00054 111 When Pig wanted something, he would call up to all the others. Yes, 00055 111 it was good to live this way. Three in a tree! One morning Cat 00056 111 wanted to sleep but she couldn't. Eagle was going in and out, in and 00057 111 out of the tree top. Pig made funny noises from his home in the 00058 111 tree. How can I sleep here, said Cat? Up, up in the tree she went. 00059 111 See here, Eagle, said Cat. I think Pig is unhappy with all this 00060 111 going in and out, in and out. 00061 111 Where are the machines? Why did the workmen stop building the road? 00062 111 =Jeff's dad looked up from his newspaper. Winter has come, =Jeff, 00063 111 he said. The men can't work on the road now. It says here in the 00064 111 paper that the men will go back to work in the spring. Spring, said 00065 111 =Jeff. But spring is far off! When will I find out what is on the 00066 111 other side of the mountain? The winter was long, but spring came at 00067 111 last. And with the first spring days came the road workers. In no 00068 111 time at all the road had its new black top. There it was, a new 00069 111 road that went up and over the mountain. =Jeff and =Dad talked about 00070 111 the new road. 00071 111 All day long I just stay in this one place. It is no fun being out 00072 111 there alone. Two men come up the hill. The boy sees them. Help! 00073 111 Help! Please help me! A wolf is going to eat my sheep! Where? Where 00074 111 is that a wolf? Which way did it go? Follow me! The men follow the 00075 111 boy to the top of the hill. I see many sheep, but where is a wolf? 00076 111 Which way did the wolf go? There is no wolf. I played a trick on 00077 111 you. The boy laughs. The second man talks to his friend. This boy 00078 111 has tricked us. Come, my friend. Let's get back on our horses and 00079 111 get back to the city. We have no time for this boy's tricks. The men 00080 111 ride down the hill. 00081 111 Other people we know are always in a hurry. Mothers hurry. They 00082 111 walk in a hurry and talk in a hurry. And they always want you in 00083 111 a hurry. But =grandfather and I never hurry. We walk along and walk 00084 111 along. And stop, and look, just as long as we like. Fathers hurry. 00085 111 They hurry off to work and they hurry home again. They hurry when 00086 111 they kiss you and when they take you for a ride. But =Grandfather 00087 111 and I never hurry. We walk along, and walk along and stop, and look 00088 111 just as long as we like. Brothers and sisters hurry too. They go 00089 111 so fast they often bump into you. And when they take you for a walk 00090 111 they are always leaving you far behind. 00091 111 They toot whistles and blow horns. And sometimes scare you. 00092 111 =Grandfather and I never hurry. We walk along and walk along, and 00093 111 stop and look just as long as we like. And when =Grandfather and 00094 111 I get home we sit in a chair and rock and rock. And sing a little 00095 111 and talk a little and rock and rock just as long as we like. 00096 111 Until somebody tells us to hurry. Before he had time to get into the house, the girls were tumbling all over him. Tumbling all over him and talking at the same time! Look at what we made! Just look! There was just one animal the blue-eyed colt did not like. One morning an old red fox ran out of the woods. The blue-eyed colt saw the fox as he ran into the meadow. The blue-eyed colt was afraid. He called to the rest of the colts, and they came running. When the red fox saw all those long, long legs, he ran back into the green woods. One big jump, and =Chitter-Chatter landed on that round, brown hill. He landed all right, but it was not a hill. It was a big old mud turtle. Mr =Mud =Turtle had come up out of the water to warm himself in the sun. He did not like to have a squirrel on his back. So down under the water he went. It was a nest of little rabbits. I think that picture made =Mark feel better. That is why he went right to work to paint another one. This time it was =Mother. You boys go on, said =Mother. =Susan and Jane will come soon. =Mother said, Come on, =Susan. It is time for school. =Jane is here to go with you. =Susan said, I can't find my red shoes. Here are my good black shoes. But I can't find my school shoes. Will you help me look for them? =Mother and =Susan looked and looked. But they did not find the red shoes. Time to Go Home Good-by, Miss =White! said =Patty. I want to get home fast. want to read my new book. Good-by, =Patty, said Miss =White. Good-by, boys and girls. Have fun with your new books. Good-by! said the boys and girls. Good-by, Miss =White! Then out they all went. No, no, =Sally! said =Tom. Left foot first. March the way I do. Left foot! Right foot! Left foot! =Dick said, Oh, =Tom! =Sally is too little to know which foot is her left one. =Tom said, I know how to make =Sally know which foot is which. =Jane has something that will help. =Pete and =Tom came to look at =Dick's chair. =Pete said, You will have to tell us what to do, =Dick. I don't know what we can make with this chair. =Dick said, I have something that shows what we can make. I'll go to the house and get it. I'll be right back. =Dick ran to the house. Then =Tom said to =Pete, I know how we can help =Dick. He will want the legs on his chair. Let's put them on now. =Tom and =Pete began to work fast. Soon the last leg was on the chair. =Sally and =Puff walked and walked. At last =Sally wanted to go back home. She looked up the street. She looked down the street. But she did not see her house. Oh, =Puff! she said. Which way is home? I don't know which way to go. We are lost! =Billy put black in his picture. He put in blue and red. Then he put in green and yellow. He worked and worked on his picture. After a time Miss =Day came to look at the children's work. She said, What pretty pictures! I see green trees. I see birds of all colors I see ball games and spring hats. All of you have spring pictures. =Dick said, See what I have, =Sally. =Grandmother will soon put them on the cake. Then we can tell who it is for. =Dick looked up at his =Grandmother. I will hand them to you, he said. Let me know when you want them. Thank you, said =Grandmother. Hand me just one. No more. Just then =Spot ran into the room. He barked and barked at =Dick. Get away from me, =Spot, said =Dick. I am trying to find my turtle. =Spot ran from the room, but he came right back. In and out of the room he ran. He was barking all the time. At last =Dick said, Let's find out why =Spot is barking. =Sally Wants to Help Oh dear ! said =Grandmother. The baby chickens must not be out in the rain. I must put them in the chicken house. =Dick said, I could help. I'll go with you, =Grandmother. Off ran =Grandmother and =Dick to get the baby chickens out of the rain. Mrs =Parks said, Dear me! =White Foot must come down. She can't be up there all night. She must feed her four baby kittens. =Jim said, I'll go up the tree. Maybe I can get her down. =Jim got up in the tree. But he did not get =WhiteFoot. The cat ran on up the tree. Oh, =Jim, said =Nancy. Please get =WhiteFoot! I can't get her this way, said =Jim. I'll have to try some other way. =Jim jumped down from the tree. He said, I know what to do. I'll get some things from the barn. =Nancy, you go and get a kitten. Soon after that, the =Parks family went to the zoo to see =BrownPet. There were many, many children with her that morning. But she walked away from them and went over to see Jack and =Nancy. Oh, =BrownPet! said Jack. You have many new friends here. But you like your old friends, too. Soon Mr =Rabbit came back with =Grandmother Hen. Surprise ! Surprise ! Surprise ! called her friends. =Grandmother said, Is this a party? Yes, it is, said Mr =Rabbit. This morning you said that you were going to move. So this is a surprise party for you. It is a going-away party. Look down, =Tom-=Tom, said the bird. Tell me what you see down there. The cat took one look and said, Oh! Oh my! Now there is nothing left of =Billy! No head! No legs! Nothing is left of =BillyBlue. I must find a new home in town. Slow down, said Mr =Redbird. Don't run away,=TomTom. Stop and take another look. =Grandmother =Duck saw the little ducks come splashing along. So she asked them to come in. Come and have some cake, she said. It's a fine day for splashing. I think it's a fine day for you to help me eat cake, too. Take of your boots and come in. Let me think, said Mrs =Pig. Once all five children came running into the house with long sticks. They called them stick horses! They put the sticks under the beds. Once they put on some of my shoes and hats and went walking up the road. =PennyPig had my new spring hat on her head! Right now the children are jumping in that old wagon in the barnyard. I must go stop them, and then I must go to the store. Well, well! said =Grandfather. You have not had an easy day. You go on to the store now, and I'll look after the children. I'll have them come in the house and look at it with me. The Talk of the Town Once there was a funny little man who had a toy store. His name was Mr =Willing. His store was the talk of the town. He made all the toys for his store. Mr =Willing worked all day, and he worked late at night. He was willing to make any toys that the children in town wanted. =DarkPony Every night a pony came galloping along the road to =SleepyTown. His color was dark, and he came just at dark. So he was called =DarkPony. Every night =DarkPony came galloping along the road. Galloping, galloping, galloping! &&000 SCOTT, FORESMAN and Co. (1966) 1ST GRADE SF19661S.ASC WIDE HORIZONS HELEN M. Can you guess where they go? You will find out when you read their story. As you read =Wide =Horizons, =Book =One, you will make other good friends. Except for =Dexter, who is a dragon, the friends you meet in these stories are children your own age. They do many of the same things that you do. This fruit looks good enough for people to eat, said =Dodie. It is good enough for people to eat, said the zoo keeper. We feed our animals the best food that we can get. Next, the elephant put his trunk into a pail of water. He drew the water up into his trunk. Then he curled his trunk under and put the water into his mouth. The elephant filled his trunk again. Then he threw the water over his head. He gave himself a shower! Deer, =With or =Without =Horns After a while, when =Dick and =Dodie had seen many other animals in the zoo, they came to the deer park. A beautiful deer stood and looked at them. The deer had tall horns. These horns are called antlers. This is a male deer called a stag, said =Father. Once a year he loses his antlers. Then he grows a new set. Only the male deer has antlers. There was going to be a party in the first grade, with a program about children from other lands. =Miki was chosen to be the boy from =Japan. That was fine, the children said, because =Miki really was a little boy from =Japan. He didn't remember anything about =Japan, though. =Miki's heart was thumping like a drum. Oh, =Mr =Kelly, could I call you =Gramps, too? he asked. Why, sure, you can call me =Gramps, =Miki. I'd like that. I'd like it, too! said =Miki. His eyes were shining. And =Gramps, oh, =Gramps, he said, could you come to our school party tomorrow? Grandparents are supposed to come and I don't have any and =Sara has four and I have a costume and we're going to have ice cream There was a lot more to say, but his mother stopped him. Now, =Miki, she said firmly, that's enough. Mr =Kelly is a busy man. How could he come to your party? But the children often wished that they had some kind of pet. Two old pigs, =Albert and =Alice, lived under a peach tree. They lived in an old pigsty at the back of the little house. But they were no fun as pets. When they were not eating, they just liked to sleep in the sun. When =Beanblossom got too big for the box, =Danny put her outside at night with the baby pigs. She seemed very happy to be there. After all, they were her playmates all day. And =Alice and =Albert did not mind a bit. =Dexter was a dragon with a green, scaly body and a long, twisty tail. He had short, knobby legs. He had wings like a bat's, which he would be able to fly with when he was older. =Dexter reached out and gobbled some. =Crunch, =crunch, =smack, =gobble, gulp. =Mmm ! Good ! said =Dexter. Soon the popcorn on the ground was all gone. =Dexter wanted some more. He stood on his hind legs and pulled the husks of an ear of corn on a cornstalk. Then, very carefully, he breathed his hot breath on the ear of corn. Pop went the corn. Pop, pop, pop, pop! The crisp white kernels fell in a shower. =Dexter stopped blowing smoke. He thought, I don't want them to go home. He said loudly, Oh, I guess I won't blow plain smoke any more. I think I will blow smoke rings! He stuck his head straight up in the air and blew smoke rings. The other animals just had to watch =Dexter blow smoke rings. They moved back a little so they wouldn't get scorched. They watched till they were so envious they could hardly stand it. &&000 SCOTT, FORESMAN & COMPANY (1966) SF966BK1.ASC First Grade Reader--from WIDE HORIZONS Helen Robinson -editor scanned by DPH 11-11-92 source: Teacher's College Columbia special collection &&111 A Fine Day for the Zoo =Dick and =Dodie live in a city. It is not a big city. It is not a small city. It is a city just large enough to have a zoo with many wonderful animals in it. The animals come from many parts of the world. It's a sunny day, said =Father one afternoon. Who would like to go to the zoo? I would! I would! cried =Dick and =Dodie together. Not I, said their mother. We are having company for dinner. I shall stay home and cook. Off to the zoo went =Dick, =Dodie, and =Father in their car. Soon it was lunchtime for the monkeys. The zoo keeper brought bowls of fruits and nuts. Monkeys eat fruits and nuts when they live in the jungle. they like the same things to eat when they live in the zoo. This fruit looks good enough for people to eat, said =Dodie. It is good enough for people to eat, said the zoo keeper. We feed our animals the best food that we can get. Giraffe, The Tallest Animal. =Dick and =Dodie had to look up, Up, UP to see the top of the next animal. It was a giraffe. I would hate to be a giraffe with a sore throat, said =Dodie. See how long his neck is. The giraffe is the tallest of all the animals in the world. His long neck helps him reach his food. He eats leaves from some of the tallest trees in =Africa. The giraffe's long tongue helps him get his food. He puts his tongue out, gets hold of a leaf, and brings it to his mouth. You may have heard someone say that the giraffe has no voice. This is not really true. A mother giraffe is sometimes heard calling her baby. She makes a =moo sound. =Miki lived in =NewYorkCity above his father's flower shop. And you can invite your grandparents to the party, children, the teacher said. The children were very happy about this, all except =Miki =Takino. Some of the children had four grandparents. Others had two or three. But =Miki had none. They had died before he was born. When =Miki got home from school that day, his mother was working at the sewing machine. =Miki told her about the party, and she sighed and patted his head. Don't worry, =Miki. Your father and I will be there. And I know you will be a wonderful little =Japanese boy. She laid a piece of lace on the pink material, and =Miki knew that she didn't want to talk any more. Tomorrow at seven finally came. Behind the stage of the school auditorium were the children in =Miki's class, dressed in costumes of other lands. =Miki wondered if =Mr =Kelly was out in front with his mother and father. Had he really come? The piano was playing, and the children were watching their teacher, =Miss =Prentiss. There was singing and dancing. =Sara was =Miki's partner. She was dressed like a =Dutch girl. It was so exciting being on the stage, =Miki almost wished that the time for ice cream would never come. So at last the children had some pets. Anyway, the girls did. Little funny, squeally pets they could play with. Each little girl took one piglet and it after after herself =Annie, =Betsy, and =Cary. The girls ran with the pigs and fed them sugar cookies. They washed the pigs in sudsy water in the sun. They even tied rainbow-colored hair ribbons on the pigs curly tails. They dressed the pigs in doll clothes and rocked them to sleep. That lamb would take nearly as much care as a real baby, said =Andrew. Your mother does not have time to take care of a lamb. I'll tend to it, =Andrew, said =Danny eagerly. I'll do everything. All right, said =Andrew. I'll let you take it. The lamb was all =Danny's. The only thing his mother did was to give =Danny an old baby bottle. He found a box and put one of his own clean shirts in it for the lamb to lie on. =Danny named the lamb =Beanblossom, and she loved him with all her heart. As soon as she grew strong enough, she followed him everywhere. =Dexter could hardly believe it. He sat still and breathed hard. Sure enough, smoke was coming out of his mouth. =Dexter cried, I never knew I could blow smoke! He ran to his mother, panting for joy. He shouted, =Look at me blowing smoke! He ran to the edge of the river where he could see himself in the water. He said, Just look at that smoke! He thought, I'm going to show the other animals how I can blow smoke ! Pretty soon the giraffe slipped quietly away and hid behind a rock. He said, =Whoof, trying to blow smoke like =Dexter. But he couldn't do it. Then the zebra ran off and disappeared over a hill. He said, =Whh, and =Whh, trying to blow smoke like =Dexter. But the zebra couldn't do it. Finally the elephant said, =Good-by, I have to go. He trotted into the wood and went, =Whoo, =whoo, =whoo, trying to blow smoke like =Dexter. But he couldn't. So he said, =Pooh! Who wants to blow smoke! When =Dexter saw the other animals actually going, he stopped blowing smoke rings. Suddenly he remembered that he wanted someone to play with. He called out hopefully, Want me to come with you? The giraffe said no, they didn't. =Dexter watched them go. Then he went home and said to his mother in a forlorn voice, I haven't got anything to do. His mother said, Blow some smoke. I don't feel like it, said =Dexter. His mother said, =Go play with the other animals. They won't play with me, said =Dexter. Then you must have been showing off, his mother said. =Dexter reached out and gobbled some. Crunch, crunch, smack, gobble, gulp. =Mmm! Good! said =Dexter. Soon the popcorn on the ground was all gone. =Dexter wanted some more. He stood on his hind legs and pulled the husks off an ear of corn on a cornstalk. Then, very carefully, he breathed his hot breath on the ear of corn. Pop went the corn. Pop, pop, pop, pop! The crisp white kernels fell in a shower. =Dexter moved eagerly along the row of cornstalks to a new place and quickly pulled off some of the husks. His hot breath started to pop the corn. The popcorn fell all around. The animals crunched and munched. Soon the popcorn was gone. =Dexter said quickly, for fear they would go away, I'll pop some more if you want. &&000 SCOTT, FORESMAN & Co. On a machine, said =Henry. We're going to build the greatest machine in the world. NOISE A girl was helping her mother set the table. All at once the dishes rattled. The table shook. The girl jumped. What had happened? The girl lived near an airport. A jet airplane had taken off. The sound of the airplane shook the house. Hello, Mr =Pool. Aren't you the children who bought the =MechanicalHelper yesterday? Yes, we are. We want you to take it back. Why? Didn't the robot work? Oh, it worked all right. But our mother didn't like it. She said we have to learn to pick up our own things. Very well. I'll give your money back to you. We're back. So I see. You've come to tell me how much you like the =MechanicalHelper! We don't like it at all. You don't like it! Why not? Well, when we pick up things from th, floor, we put them where they belong But the robot throws everything in the wastebasket. It threw away my paper dolls. It threw away my pajamas. Very well. I'll give your money back. Just then =Mama and the three little fish saw a crack in the big, green thing. Something was coming out of the crack! Look, said =Spink, =Spank, and =Spunk. It is a dinosaur! No, no, no! said a voice. I'm just Mr =Jellyfish. I was on my way to a party dressed as a dinosaur egg. I was going to jump out of the egg at the party and scare everybody. But I got stuck in the mud. I had to sit and wait for someone to save me. Thanks for helping. Thank me, said =Spunk. I see it! said =Mama. And it's not a dinosaur egg. It's a watermelon. Some people who are camping nearby put the watermelon in the water to keep it cool. =Ohhhhh, said the three little fish. How silly we have been. Maybe you can think of another way to end this story. Try it. =Fish by =AdrienStoutenburg A fish is hard to hold onto for he has no handles. He is smooth almost everywhere and he tries to swim away in your hand. Only his fins are sharp and the cold edges of his face; if they touch you, it feels like holding green, fast water with tacks in it. Aloha, said =Paka'a when he had finished his mat. Thank you for helping me. Aloha, said the woman. Come back again. =Paka'a went to find two poles to hold his mat. He tied the mat to the poles and took them to his canoe. He tied them to the canoe over and over again. He learned to tie them just the way they had been in his dream. The next day =Paka'a went out fishing with the men of the island. His canoe looked like the other canoes. But his mat and poles were right by his side. When the canoes were far out in the water, =Paka'a threw out the big fishing net. Then he pulled the net in and began to fill his canoe with fish. At last it was time to stop fishing. The men turned their canoes and began to paddle home. Aloha, =Paka'a, called a man. You are not big enough to paddle a canoe filled with fish. =Paka'a said, I will get home faster than you. Well, then! called another man. Do you want to race? Yes, said =Paka'a. Let us all race and see who wins. =Paka'a pulled out the two poles and his mat. He tied them in place. Then he sat back and let the wind do the work. Of course =Sammy began to laugh. Then he began to wiggle. He laughed and he wiggled, and he wiggled and he laughed. He laughed so hard and wiggled so fast that he jumped high into the air. When he came down, the knot was untied! He had wiggled right out of it. Thank you, little bird, said =Sammy. I'll never try that again. =Sammy still likes to show off. He stands on his head. He wears silly hats. He makes funny faces. He will do anything to make the other snakes look at him. But he never ties himself into knots. Never. Never. Well, almost never! You will need a rope about three feet long. These pictures show how to tie the square knot. Look at one picture at a time. Do what it shows. Only the ends of the rope are shown. They are different colors to help you see how the knot is tied. Around and down you go on this giant slide in =India. my name is =Anna, My husband's name is =Albert, I come from =Alaska, And we sell apples. my name is =Betty, My husband's name is =Bob, I come from =Boston, And we sell bottles. my name is =Clara, My husband's name is =Carl, I come from =Canada, And we sell cats. The Girl and the Pail of Milk A Fable by =Aesop I'll sell this milk for lots of money. Then I'll buy some eggs that will hatch into chickens. Then I'll sell the chickens and buy a beautiful dress! The boys will all want to dance with me. The girls will all be mad at me. But I won't care at all, at all ! I'll just laugh and toss my head, like this! Oh, no ! No milk! No eggs! No chickens! No dress! Moral, Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. At last =Maria got all the way to the top of the steps. =Pedro and =Ricardo were jumping up and down inside the door. =Maria ! =Maria ! cried =Ricardo. =Grandma left a game for us to play! =Maria said, I don't want Look! said =Pedro. Here is a note from =Grandma. Read it. =Maria looked at the note. Look inside the what, asked Maria? It's a game, said =Ricardo. Go on. Do what the note says. What in the world could that be, asked Maria? She thought for a long time. My blue blanket, she cried? =Maria ran to the bedroom and picked up her blanket. But nothing fell out. =Maria put the blanket back on the bed. Then she thought again about =BB Suddenly =Pedro said, I'm hungry. I want some bread and jelly. =Maria said, Oh, =Pedro, not now. I'm trying to think. But she went to take the bread out of the bread box. A note, she cried! Here in the bread box ! Pedro laughed. I know, he said. I put it there. I don't really want bread and jelly. I just wanted to help you. So if you eat spaghetti, All covered with cheese, Hold onto your meatball, And don't ever sneeze ! Early Men The first men lived in caves many thousands of years ago. Then men learned how to make mud huts. They began to live together in villages. These men made many tools of sharp stones. They were the first to tame wild dogs. Then they tamed goats, sheep, cattle, and pigs. These men found seeds and learned how to grow plants. They learned to make cloth. They learned to make cooking pots and dishes. The soup will be thin this time, the young man told her. I've been making soup with the same stone all week. I wish I had a little flour to put in the pot. But I'll do without it. Think no more about it. I may have a scrap of flour somewhere, said the old woman. She went to get it. The young man put the flour into the soup. He went on stirring it around and around. This soup could be good enough for company, said the young man. It only needs a bit of meat and a few potatoes. But I'll do without it. Think no more about it. The old woman thought it over. I might have just a bit of each, she said. She was back in a minute with some meat and a few potatoes. And the young man stirred them into the soup. This soup will be so good, we could ask the king to have a dish of it, he said. The king eats stone soup every night. I know because I used to be the king's cook he told the old woman. Well, I never, she cried!. She thought the young man was wonderful. I wish we had a drop of milk and a little barley now, said the young man. But I'll do without it. It stopped a few feet from the manhole. It started to make a hole in the street. Then the monkeys painted the other animals. The lion wanted his nose green. And =Henry wanted spots. And =Pegleg had fun in the pigpen. =Peg the pig ran to a pit. It was a big pit. A nut was in it. I can get into the pit, said =Peg. And I can get the nut. But a net was in the pit. I can get the nut, said =Peg. =Peg ran to get the nut. =Peg bit the nut. But =Peg's leg got into the net. =Wag the dog ran to the pit. =Wag was =Peg's pal. =Wag! =Wag! =Peg said. I am a sad pig. =Tim got a cap. But the cap did not fit =Tim. It was big and =Tim was sad. =Hal was =Tim's pal. =Hal said to =Tim, Get a pin. Get a pin and pin it. =Tim said, But I cannot get a pin. I cannot pin the cap. =Sam was =Tim's pal. =Sam said to =Tim, Get the cap wet. It fits if it is wet. =Tim said, But I cannot wet the cap. =Al was =Tim's pal. =Al said, It's a man's cap. Get rid of it. Get rid of it and get a WIG! =Jeff =Wells got on the bus. =Jeff had his dog, =Rags. The bus man said, No dogs on my bus. But =Rags ran on the bus and up to Miss =Hull. The cats in the box began to fuss and hiss. Miss =Hull got up. The box of cats fell! =Muff, =Cuff, =Huff, =Puff, =Ruff, and =ENuff began to yell. Miss =Hull and =Jeff =Wells began to yell. The bus man began to yell! It was a mess! The six cats ran zigzag on the bus. I cannot run the bus! said the bus man. Rags and the cats CANNOT run in my bus, and the bus has to go! So =Rags sat. And the cats sat. =Jeff =Wells said to the bus man, Run the bus to the top of the hill. Go to the =Red =Mill =Inn, and I will get =Rags up. The bus man was mad. But the bus man ran the bus up the hill. =Jeff =Wells ran into the =Red =Mill Inn, got a pan of ham, and set it in the inn. A lot of ham was in the pan. The bobsled began to slip. It began to go fast. It went as fast as it could. It slid fast past a log. It slid fast past a flag. It slid fast past a bump. Help! Help! The twins began to yell as the big sled went on and on. The bobsled can't stop! But at last the big bobsled did stop. It hit a bump! =Flip! =Flop! =Fran, =Fred, and the twins fell off the sled. But they got up and began to grin. They went up the hill to =Dad. They ran as fast as they could. As they ran, they began to yell, It's fun, =Dad! It's fun! A bobsled is fun. We have a sled! The ducks began to get big. And they did not just sit on the sand. They got in back of =Mom =Duck and went to the pond. Go for a swim, said =Mom =Duck. So the ducks began to step into the pond. But not the last duck. She would not go into the pond. The rest of the ducks swam. But the last duck just sat. I would swim if I could. But I know I can't, she said to herself. She was sad. The rest of the ducks swam up to her. They said, =Ducks swim in ponds. You must swim if you are a duck. The last duck said, What have I got to know, so I can swim? But the rest of the ducks could not tell her what she had to know. They said, Just jump into the pond and swim. But the last duck just sat on the sand. =Bill sat on a log. He would not sit in the sun. =Russ said to him, =Bill, you should get off the log and sit in the sun. If you would sit in the sun, you could get a suntan. On a bump on a log Was a fat, red elf. He sat on the log Just to rest himself. His cap was a sack, And his pants had rips. And the elf, as he sat, Put his hands on his hips. The hotdog grill At the end of the block Has lots of smells And a big glass clock. Cliff =Black is the man Who runs the grill. He grins at me As I know he will. He spills some stuff On a hotdog bun And sticks in a dog. Next comes the fun! My hand grabs the bun, And my lips go smack! In six big gulps I have had my snack. =Cling-clang-cling! =Cling-clang-cling! The bell began to ring. We want the king. But he was on a swing. =Cling-clang-cling! =Cling-clang-cling! =Wing-a-zing-a-zing! If I am the king, Why shouldn't I swing As I sit and sing? =Wing-a-zing-a-zing! =Ting-a-ling You are a king! You must not sing! You must not swing! =Ting-a-ling-ling! =Wing-a-zing-a-zing! Let's have the bell ring. For it's fun to sing. And it's fun to swing! =Wing-a-zing-a-zing! =Cling-a-clang-clinging, The bell is still ringing. The swing is still swinging! The king is still singing, Still =wing-a-zing-zinging! Can you chop up a cobweb? said =Beth. Well, =Chuck said, I want =Mother to fix me a cobweb sandwich and one bunch of frogs wings. =Beth began to grin. Would you want to add a bunch of tin figs to that lunch? she said. That would be swell, =Chuck said. Can you think of any other things? =Beth began to think, and at last she said, Yes, I think I'd add a pinch of fresh mist. You're next, =Chuck. I'd wish for a box of =huffs and =puffs, =Chuck said. And an inch of hot red and black dots. =Beth said, I have another! I want pink ranch punch and a chest of sunset chips! =King =Gruff kept a bell on his desk. If he rang it, a man would dash in to ask, What is your wish? Can I help you, my king? The man would kiss the king's ring, as the king had said he must do. The king would clap his hands and men would come rushing in to do what he said. Yet =King =Gruff was a sad man. As fast as his men were, the king would get mad and yell at them. He would smash his fist on his desk. And he would bang on his bell. The king's men would do as the king said, but they were not fond of him. They left the king to himself. As the gruff king sat by himself, he said, Men will jump if I yell. They will rush in to me if I ring my bell. They do what I wish, but still I don't get what I want. My men have left me. Not a man is a pal to me. I don't know what to do. The king didn't know he was so gruff. =Frank and =Hank =Elf said, Yes, =Mom. We'll sit. We'll rest, and have some fun, in the jug. Not me! said =Sam =Elf. I don't want to rest. I want to jump and run. I can't jump and run here in the jug. It isn't any fun in here. I'm big! I want to go! But =Mom =Elf said, No, no, =Sam. You're not big yet. You mustn't go. =Sam =Elf was sad. But =Mom =Elf left. She went skipping off to get the milk. =Hank =Elf got into his bunk bed, and in a wink he was napping. But =Sam =Elf did not. He got up to the neck of the jug. Sam =Elf, you come back! said =Frank. You know you will get a spanking. =Sam =Elf sat on the neck of the jug and said to himself, At last! At last! At last I can run and jump! =Plunk! He had left the jug. &&000 WINSTON (1960) WIN960IC.ASC SIMPLEST LEVEL OF READER SCANNED BY DPH 11-10-92 &&111 Sit Down Look, =Nancy and =Bill. I called Miss =Green, said =Mother. =Susan will go to her house. =Bill and =Nancy will go after school. =Bill said, Miss =Green will sit with Baby =Susan. I am not a baby, said =Susan. I like Miss =Green. I will eat and play and work with her. Come on, =Susan, said =Dad. It is good to see you all, said =Mother. =Uncle =Jack's boy came with =Mother and me, said =Dad to Miss =Green. He can play with the children. This is a good Sunday, said =Nancy. Now we can go home. The children thanked Miss =Green, and they all went home. Two in One =Cooky walked down =School Street as =Jack came up. The two went to the bus stop. =Cooky looked at =Jack and laughed. I want to make money, said =Jack. I want to help my dad. This is a good drink. I will get money for it as soon as the bus stops. This is funny, said =Cooky. I want money to take a bus to town. A parade will be in town on Sunday, and I want to see it. Two Surprises =Mother's dad looked in. May I help? he asked. No, thank you, said =Bill. =Grandad said, =Nancy, may I help you? Sit here by me =Grandad. I can get down here and clean. You are too old to get down like this and clean, said =Nancy. =Grandad did not sit down. He wanted to help the family. He saw =Mother put all the shoes on the bed. As he looked at the shoes, he saw what to do. Now he was ready to work, too. I am not too old to work, =Grandad thought. Day after day I worked on shoes. I helped make old ones look like new. I will surprise this family. Two Boys Have Fun Look, a new penny! said =Nancy. I went out to get the milk and saw the penny in a hole. =Bill looked at the penny, and then he looked at =Jack. He wanted to have fun with =Nancy. He said, Take it with you all day, and you will get what you want. It is good luck to find a new penny. Your new penny is a good-luck penny. Here is a little bag, said =Jack. Put your good-luck penny in it. Thank you, =Jack, said =Nancy. I wanted a bag for the penny, and now I have one. This good-luck penny works. I may get many things I want. First I want to play with the big girls. They tell me I am too little to play what they play. =Nancy put the good-luck penny in the bag and ran up the street. =Mother, said =May. Are you looking for something, too? We cannot find my shoes. Yes, said =Mother. I am looking for =Dad's old shoes. He wants me to take the shoes to town. =Nancy said, This is not funny now. No one in this house can find shoes. What will you do? May looked at her baby brother and thought of something. Then she asked =Nancy for her shoe Here they are, said =Nancy. Now, what will you do? You will see, said May. =May put =Nancy's shoes down and called her baby brother. He saw the shoes and looked happy. Soon he walked away with one of the shoes. Now the surprise cake is ready, too, said =Mother. See me take it out. =Susan was surprised. See what you did! she said. You put the up side down. Put this side up. =Mother laughed and said, This is called upside down cake. Go out and skate now, and soon I will call you. Then you will find out how good upside down cake can be. =Susan did not want to skate alone. She wished =Nancy could be home. She saw =Red and =Spotty, but she did not want to play with them. She was hungry and thought of =Mother's upside down cake. At last she sat down and thought of upside down things. She sat and sat and sat. Soon =Susan's pets sat down with her. But she did not see them. The boys and girls went to hide. Soon they were ready, and =Cherry came to look for them. One by one all but =Ted came in. =Cherry had to look and look for him. At last she saw him in the garden. Then she called, I see you, =Ted! You are in the garden. Now you must run to the house, but I will get there first. =Cherry ran as fast as she could. Then she was surprised. There was =Ted at the house. Is this magic? thought =Cherry. Did he fly to the house? I ran as fast as I could, but he was there first. Then =Cherry said to him, Are you magic? Next time I will not call to you. I will just run to the house. The man saw =Red jump into the yellow car. Get out, he called. You may not stay in my car. You must have money to ride with me. =Red did not have money, but he liked this yellow car. He just sat in the back and looked. Then the man went in to get Red. He saw something and thought, I will have some fun. =Red may stay in my car. The children were looking for =Red. They were surprised when they saw him in the back of the big yellow car. How did he get in there? thought =Bill. It is not our car. Did he run away from home? =Mother! =Mother! called =Nancy. =Red is back. He came home in a big yellow car. As soon as the car came to a stop, Red jumped out. He was happy to be home and did not want to stay in the car. =WhiteCat stayed up, so =Hide-Away played alone. He had a good time standing on =Ted's skates. Then he ran back of his box to hide. Just then the twins came in. They were surprised to see =WhiteCat. They took one look at him and said, Get down and stay down! You will make holes there. Then =Mother will have work to do. White Cat jumped down and ran out. Then he sat down and thought, I was a happy cat in this house. Now =Hide-Away lives here, and I am not happy. Hide-Away has too many tricks. He drinks my milk and takes my ball. He runs after me and makes me jump on things. Then he hides when the boys come. I wish he did not live here. I know what I will do. I will run away from home, and I will not come back. Then he cannot play his tricks on me. Please, =Dad, take me with you. I can help find things to eat for our family. You stay home with =Mother. You are not ready for night work. It is cold out, and this is no picnic. I am big like this mouse and can do big things, too. I will get my coat and go out. =Mother will not miss me if I get back soon. This is fun. I can jump from one side to the other. Soon I will go to the house. I will look for some lemon cake. Down there is =Spotty with her baby Now I am going to have some fun. I will hold the tack like this. When she gets here, I will let it go and run. The other children and Miss =White liked =Cherry's thought. They wanted to help the new children, so they all went to see the school. I know what we do here, said =Ted. This is where we eat lunch. We walk up there to get a hot lunch. We had a lunchroom in my old school, but it was a big one. I wish I had found this room when I was lost, said =Penny. I would have stayed in here. Next the children saw a big room. Sometimes we play in here, said =May. Sometimes we come in to see children from some other room put on a show. It is fun to walk up here, said Miss =White. Come up this way, and then we will go down over there. In our old school we could go down a back way, said =Ted. Come, =Ned, let us go behind this and see if there is a back way here. When =Nancy came back, the children stood up to see her good book. They all talked at one time because each one wanted to ask about the book. Can a bus cry? asked =Ted. Who would hurt a bus? Who is on the truck? asked May. Will the truck cry, too? As the children talked and talked, Miss =White turned to Miss =Little. This is very funny, she said. Do you know who thought that books would help children to be quiet? It was =Nancy. Happy Again One time a happy little bus named Run-About lived in a big town. Each day he went about the town doing what he could to help. First he took many dads to work and some mothers to stores. Then he had time to do the work he liked best. Up and down he went to get children who wanted to ride with him. He liked them best because he could laugh and talk with them. So they all had fun as they went along the streets of the town. A Surprise That Came Down The children laughed and talked as they walked home from school. I wish it were Sunday now, said =Nancy. I want to go to Big =Bill's picnic. Airplane picnics are new to me, said =Ted. What will we do at Big =Bill's house? No one can tell, said =Cooky. =BigBill's picnics are all big surprises. When Sunday came, children fro all over town went to see =BigBill. =BigBill met them at the door. Then they went in and saw Miss and Mrs =Bell playing a game. Mrs =Bell said, Stand along here and play the hungry-duck game. with =zzzz. We will take turns and see who can give this duck something to eat. So one by one the children played the hungry-duck game. As they played, =Ted thought, =BigBill does have surprises. He asked us to a big airplane picnic. and now we are playing a duck game. &&000 ALLYN AND BACON (1968) 1ST GRADE ALL9681S.ASC OUR TOWN by William D. She has come to get her kittens. Go away, =Midnight, said =Linda. You can't have your kittens now. =Yuki and I want to play with them. Look, Mr =Doolittle ! said =Bill. Someone is going to move into that new yellow house. Who is going to move in there? Do you know ? No, I don't, said Mr =Doolittle. But I'll ask the workmen. They may know who is going to live there. Mr =Doolittle did ask the workmen. But they didn't know. Doctor =Small lived in a big city before he moved to =Our =Town. One of his friends there was a little city girl. She had no money to buy a pet. So she had a pet mouse. One day the little girl came to Doctor =Small with her pet. The little mouse was very ill. Doctor =Small did all he could. But the mouse did not live. The doctor is a very kind man. He gave the little girl his three pet fish. Will looked out of the window. He saw the garbage truck go by. He saw the fire truck go down the street to a fire. He saw some squirrels playing in a tree. He saw a honeybee light on an orange and brown flower. He saw a cat run away from a dog. And then =Will had a surprise. He saw a little green bird come into the yard to get water. Next day there was no school. So =Grandfather and =Yuki worked on the birdhouse. They worked all morning. By lunch time the birdhouse was ready to be painted. Then =Yuki painted it brown. Now it looks just like the one in the bird book, she said. The mother spiders are big. They build the web. They catch the food. They make the egg nests. The daddy spiders are little. They do not work. But all the spiders help us. They eat many of the flying things that eat up our gardens and trees. Yes, we know many things about dolphins. But there are some things we do not know. We know that dolphins talk. But we don't know what they say to one another. We know that they are very good at finding their way. But we don't know just how they do it. Dolphins help us to know how animals live in the water. They make us happy, too. Dolphins are fun to look at. =Mike ran for a long way. Then all at once he saw a farm. It was not a very big farm. But it had a farmhouse, a barn, and some farm animals. =Mike sat down under a tree. He sat there for a long, long time just looking at the farm. Then all at once he said, Yes ! This is just the place for me. This farm will be my new home. Yes, laughed =Linda. =Midnight is a big mother cat now. She has three little kittens. =Yuki said, Come on, =Linda. We can have some fun. Let's play house with the kittens. Yes, let's do, said =Linda. The kittens can be our dolls. Then the girls made the kittens look like funny little dolls. What fun they had ! How is the alligator, =Jay? his daddy asked him. =Jay didn't want to tell his daddy that the alligator was gone. He looked at =Kate. Then he looked at his mother. She was looking down at something in =Kate's doll bed. And she was laughing. There in =Kate's doll bed was the baby alligator. It was fast asleep!
