Adapted from an =African folk tale An old moose had been king of the forest for a long time. He had watched over the emerald green trees, the tall pines, the silver birches, and the forest flowers. He had been the great protector of all the animals, birds, and insects. All the creatures bowed with respect whenever his majesty passed by. The animals were always happy to see his majestic antlers. They were like a shield of safety. "It's getting dark," said =Dad. "Time for bed." They put out the fire with lots of water and sand. There was not one sign of smoke. =Mark and =Darleen wiggled into their sleeping bags. They couldn't keep still. They tried and tried to sleep but they heard so many scary sounds. Pilots cannot steer their balloons. They can only make them go up or down. Wind moves in different directions and at different speeds at different levels. The pilot studies the wind and takes the balloon up or down to hit a stream of wind. Flying a balloon is a lot like sailing a boat. =Katie and I can't check any more because we have a job to do at the Community Hall. Everyone in our family is busy setting up tables, moving chairs, and blowing up balloons. "Come on in!" says Aunt =Peggy. "Where have you been? We've been looking for you to help us set up for the community supper." We all work like beavers and the job is finished in a split second! Well-maybe not quite. This is the mother rabbit. The baby rabbits drink the mother's milk for food. The mother made the nest before her babies were born and lined it with dried grass, moss, and fur from her own body. She leaves her babies alone in the nest when she is not giving them milk. Suddenly, =RodeoPup grabbed my fishnet tights with his teeth (he would never, ever hurt me) and unraveled them as he ran off towards the schoolyard. Later, in the school's office, my teacher comforted me. =Rodeo Pup had to sit very still and be on his best behavior. There once was a farmer whose name was =Tillie. She had a small farm with her husband, =Fred. Every day they both worked hard. One fine spring morning =Tillie woke up earlier than usual. Her husband was fast asleep. "I'll go milk the cows and, while I'm gone, I'm sure =Fred will make the breakfast." Off she went to milk the cows. Just as =Jocelyn was starting to dig for worms, her friend =Jenny came along.
